Mutton Bone Soup (Nenjellumbu Soup) | A Nutritious and Flavorful South Indian Bone Broth Recipe
Mutton bone soup, especially made from goat chest bones (nenjellumbu), is a traditional and healthy South Indian recipe loved for its depth of flavor and nutritional value. Cooked with basic spices like pepper, cumin, and turmeric, and enriched with onions, tomatoes, and dal, this soup is a comforting dish often served in Tamil households.
One of the highlights of this soup is its health benefits. The bone marrow adds richness while also supplying collagen, calcium, and essential minerals. It boosts immunity, improves joint strength, and provides energy, making it ideal for both children and adults. It’s especially good during colder seasons or when recovering from fatigue or illness.
Mutton bone soup can be prepared using a regular pot or a pressure cooker for faster results. The addition of toor dal (split pigeon peas) gives it a thicker consistency and adds to its protein content. Despite its simplicity, the soup has a powerful taste and is often served as an appetizer or as a side with rice.
Whether you’re looking for warmth, strength, or just a comforting bowl of traditional flavor, this soup combines taste, health, and ease in one recipe. Make this wholesome soup at least once, and it’s sure to become a favorite in your kitchen!
